The Learning Hub

Empowering Each Child with Personalised Support and Real-World Skills

The Learning Hub at St. James’ is a vibrant, nurturing environment where pupils who need a more adaptable educational experience can thrive. Through a fully personalised approach, we provide a flexible curriculum, robust emotional support, and real-world skill development, ensuring that every child can grow academically, emotionally, and socially.

Tailored Academic and Functional Learning

Every pupil in the Learning Hub follows a unique timetable crafted to their strengths, interests, and needs. We recognise that some pupils benefit from focusing on a smaller set of core subjects or practical qualifications like BTECs, while others may wish to explore a broader range of functional skills that prepare them for independent living.

Our tailored curriculum includes:

  • Core Subjects: Personalised learning in essential academic areas, adapted to each pupil's pace and style. All pupils will be taught our core subjects, but teaching will be structured around their individual learning styles. However, outside of our core subjects, we want our pupils to have more of a say. For example, If they thrive in music and drama, then we will shape their timetable to follow a more creative route.
  • Functional Skills and BTECs: Practical qualifications that provide real-world applications for core skills, with a focus on meaningful, hands-on learning.
  • Flexible Pathways: Pupils may concentrate on vocational skills, life skills, or a more academic based approach based on their personal aspirations and needs.

One-to-One Support and Community Wellbeing

Central to the Learning Hub’s mission is the “Team Around the Child” model, which ensures that each child has a circle of trusted adults, mentors, and peers providing academic guidance, emotional support, and a sense of community. We understand the importance of feeling safe and supported, so our team prioritises each child’s mental and emotional wellbeing.

Support features include:

  • One-on-One Guidance: Dedicated staff members work individually with pupils, offering personalised attention to build confidence and encourage progress.
  • Small Group Sessions: Opportunities to connect with peers in supportive group settings, reinforcing social skills and building friendships.
  • Mental and Emotional Wellbeing Support: Our team fosters a safe space for pupils to share their thoughts and feelings, helping them develop resilience and self-assurance.

Life Skills and Independence: Preparing for the Future

In addition to academics, we focus on essential life skills that build independence and confidence, helping our pupils feel prepared for life beyond school. Through our Azdan programme, pupils engage in practical, hands-on activities that teach critical skills, such as:

  • Daily Living Skills: Cooking, budgeting, and managing personal care.
  • Social and Communication Skills: Practising social interactions, teamwork, and problem-solving.
  • Self-Confidence and Independence: Activities designed to help students gain confidence and feel empowered as they learn to navigate daily life.

These experiences give our pupils the tools they need to lead fulfilling, independent lives and approach future challenges with self-assurance.
