The Importance of Mindfulness in Exam Preparation
Next week St. James’ Year 11 and Year 13 pupils will embark on a week of mock examinations in preparation for the summer GCSE and A Level exams.
For the first time, as part of exam preparation all pupils will be encouraged to take part in a mindfulness activity before and after their exams.
Mindfulness is a powerful tool that can help pupils to deal with exam stress and anxiety. Just a short 5 minute session prior to start of an exam can assist pupils with freeing their minds of any stress and anxiety and allow them to focus on the paper in front of them.
Pupils will be given a reflective journal, where they can write down thoughts, feelings or concerns; which can be in any form, free writing, doodling, word lists and mind mapping. It is open to the interpretation of each pupil how they would like to express their feelings.
The following week, after exams, there will be a reflective session where all pupils will have the opportunity to think about what helped or hindered their exam preparation and how they can better prepare for their next set of examinations.
Diet, exercise, sleep and meaningful down-time all have an impact on exam success. The mindful activities will help pupils realise what factors they can change to increase their chances of reaching their maximum potential.
